An atlas of islands that do not exist
256 hand-engraved sea charts, each surveyed from a hash fixed at mint and drawn entirely on-chain the moment it is opened.
Each sheet is a chart in the manner of an eighteenth-century engraver: coastline and soundings, hachured mountains, rivers found by real hydrology, a compass rose with its magnetic variation, a cartouche, and the small mercies of the trade, drawn by lot: a ship under sail on about half the sheets, a whale on a third, a serpent on a quarter, a wreck with the name of the lost vessel on two in five. Rarer still, and never more than a handful in the whole atlas: a kraken where the sea is troubled, a burning mountain, a ghost ship seen once in the fog, and a lone rock in an empty sea.
None of it is stored as an image. What lives on Ethereum is the survey itself: a 256-bit hash fixed when the sheet is minted, a fifty-kilobyte engraving program, and two period typefaces. Open the token anywhere and the chart draws itself in front of you, over twenty-five seconds, from nothing but those bytes. No server, no file host, no link that can rot.
Islands are named by the same generator that runs on-chain, so the name on the cartouche is the name in the token's metadata. Six sheets from the survey:
The keeper of a sheet may name its principal port, once and for ever. The name is written into the contract, validated on-chain, and engraved as "Port Alexandria" on every rendering thereafter.
The chart reads its owner from the chain. On mainnet it shows your ENS name, forward-verified, in the line "in the possession of". Sell the sheet and the cartouche changes hands with it.
Foxing, creases and tide-lines deepen slowly with the years since mint. A sheet minted today and opened in a decade will look ten years older. Nobody can hurry it or undo it.
No blind mint and no metadata swap. Your sheet's hash is fixed in the mint transaction, and the first time you open it, it surveys itself.
The renderer and fonts are stored as contract bytecode, checksummed and frozen. The renderer contract can be replaced until it is frozen after launch, only to fix how the document is assembled, never the art or a hash. Traits are attested on-chain from the canonical script and then frozen. Anyone can recompute every sheet from the chain alone.
Nothing happens to the sheets. This site is a convenience; the token's tokenURI returns the complete document, fonts included, from the contract itself.
The layout is computed from the embedded font, glyph by glyph, so it is the same everywhere the token is opened. Marketplace grids show a title page or a snapshot; opening the token shows the live chart.
No. The hash, the mint time and the harbour name are immutable, and the survey program is frozen bytecode. The one owner-controlled switch, the renderer, is frozen after launch.
The hash is derived from the block's randomness, the minter and the block hash at mint. As with every on-chain generative project, a minter could in principle simulate a transaction and cancel it; the price of doing so on mainnet exceeds the mint price.
Every count on a chart varies: islands, lakes, rivers, peaks, roads. The ornaments are drawn by lot at fixed odds, ship 55%, wreck 40%, whale 35%, serpent 25%, and four super-rares at 3% or less: a burning mountain, a kraken, a ghost ship and a lone rock. Expect roughly eight burning mountains, five krakens, five ghost ships and two lone rocks in 256, but the lots are honest, so the atlas may hold more or fewer.
